Baby’s First Thanksgiving

Experiencing holidays with a baby is so exciting. I sometimes think the holidays are even better as an adult seeing it through the fresh eyes of my babies and children. Here are some ideas for celebrating your baby’s first Thanksgiving.
Use those meaty little hands and feet for crafts
A classic handprint turkey is a must for baby’s first Thanksgiving. You should probably do this ahead of time, though, to avoid an extra mess on Thanksgiving day, then display it on Thanksgiving. Just make sure baby is in a good mood when you attempt this craft. Check out Pinterest for other first-Thanksgiving craft ideas.
Don’t have expectations
Babies can be unpredictable, so it’s best to assume they won’t perfectly cooperate, and just go with it. Missed naps, diaper blowouts, teething crankiness, and stranger anxiety are just a few things that could potentially derail your plans but don’t sweat it. Focus on meeting your baby’s needs first. A baby who feels safe and comfortable is more likely to be happy, so don’t let the pressure of meeting expectations rob you of quality time with your baby and other special people with you on Thanksgiving.
Make them a Thanksgiving Dinner
The good thing about Thanksgiving foods is that they’re often found in puree form! From carrots and sweet potatoes to turkey medleys, the baby food aisle likely has a full Thanksgiving meal for your baby! If your baby is old enough they can have some of the real deal, like diced turkey, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes (mixed with breast milk or formula if dairy is a concern), and baked apples.
Take a themed-photo
There are some adorable themed photo-shoots you could do for Thanksgiving. Holding a banner that says, “I’m thankful for you,” with baby in the middle is adorable. Using pumpkins and leaves for a fall-themed photo-shoot with baby as the subject will create a treasured keepsake you can display every Thanksgiving.
Start New Traditions
Begin new family traditions that you can enjoy and look back on each year. Even little babies would love watching the Macy’s Day Parade as the giant colorful floats and balloons slowly travel across the screen. Designating a new recipe as a Thanksgiving tradition, taking a drive to look at the colorful leaves, or lighting a fire in the fireplace for the first time are all nostalgic things that can make baby’s first Thanksgiving, and every Thanksgiving after, special and memorable.
